Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glycerites are liquid extracts made by using glycerin as the primary solvent to extract active constituents from herbs. The use of glycerites for bites and stings is primarily based on traditional herbal medicine practices rather than robust scientific validation. Herbalists have historically prepared glycerite extracts of soothing and anti-inflammatory herbs (such as calendula, plantain, or chamomile) and applied them topically or, less commonly, taken them internally to help ease the discomfort, redness, and swelling associated with minor bites and stings. The rationale is that the glycerite acts as a vehicle for the herb’s potentially beneficial compounds while also providing some humectant (moisturizing) and mild soothing properties due to the glycerin itself. However, evidence supporting the effectiveness of glycerite preparations specifically for bites and stings is limited to traditional usage and anecdotal reports. There are no high-quality clinical studies directly evaluating glycerites (as opposed to the herbs themselves or other preparations) for this purpose. Some herbs commonly used in such glycerites do have limited scientific support for anti-inflammatory or skin-soothing effects, but this does not directly validate the use of glycerites as a class for this condition. Thus, their use is justified primarily by tradition, with only minor support from the properties of specific herbs rather than from research on glycerites themselves.
