Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hairy Arnica (Arnica mollis) is primarily used to support or treat bites and stings based on traditional and folk medicine practices, rather than on robust scientific validation. Indigenous peoples in North America, as well as practitioners of European herbal medicine (using related Arnica species), have historically applied poultices or salves made from Arnica species to the skin to help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with insect bites, bee stings, and other minor skin injuries. The rationale for this use is largely anecdotal, relying on the plant’s reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties observed in folk practice.

Scientific studies on Arnica mollis specifically are extremely limited, and most available research focuses on Arnica montana, a related species. While some laboratory and clinical studies on Arnica montana have demonstrated potential anti-inflammatory effects, there is little direct evidence confirming the efficacy or safety of Arnica mollis for bites and stings. As such, the traditional use of Hairy Arnica for this purpose remains mostly unverified by modern research, but persists in herbal medicine due to historical precedent and anecdotal reports. Caution is advised, as topical application of Arnica can sometimes cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
