Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in ancient Greece, Rome, and throughout medieval Europe. It was sometimes applied externally for a variety of conditions, including bites and stings from insects and animals. This use appears in several historical sources, where poultices or ointments containing henbane leaves or seeds were recommended to reduce pain, inflammation, or swelling associated with such injuries. The rationale likely stemmed from henbane's known anticholinergic and analgesic properties, attributable to its tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, scopolamine, and atropine), which can dull nerve sensation. However, there is very little contemporary scientific validation for the use of henbane in treating bites and stings. Modern research on henbane has focused almost exclusively on its toxicology and its potential pharmacological uses under controlled circumstances—not on topical applications for bites or stings. Furthermore, its toxicity and risk of poisoning make it a dangerous choice for self-treatment. In summary, while the use of henbane for this purpose is rooted in historical/traditional practices, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting its efficacy or safety for bites and stings.
