Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Holarrhena, particularly Holarrhena antidysenterica, has been used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for a variety of ailments, including gastrointestinal disturbances, fever, and skin diseases. There are references in ethnobotanical literature to the use of various parts of Holarrhena (such as the bark or seeds) for treating bites and stings from insects and possibly snakes, especially in rural Indian communities. However, these uses are primarily anecdotal and folkloric, passed down through generations without rigorous scientific validation. There are no well-conducted clinical trials or pharmacological studies demonstrating the efficacy of Holarrhena extracts specifically for the treatment or management of bites and stings. Any observed benefit in traditional practice may be due to anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties demonstrated in vitro, but these effects have not been directly linked to management of envenomation or allergic reactions in a controlled setting. Therefore, while Holarrhena has a traditional history of use for bites and stings, this application is not substantiated by modern research, and the supporting evidence remains weak.
