Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

P-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) is a naturally derived compound found in small amounts in the oil of the lemon eucalyptus plant (Corymbia citriodora). It is most widely recognized and used as an active ingredient in insect repellents, particularly as an alternative to synthetic chemicals like DEET. Scientific studies have demonstrated that PMD is effective at repelling various biting insects, including mosquitoes and some biting flies, which can indirectly reduce the incidence of bites and stings when used preventively. Several public health organizations, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recognize PMD as an effective mosquito repellent.

However, there is limited scientific evidence supporting the use of PMD for treating bites and stings after they have occurred. Most of the available data addresses its preventive, not therapeutic, properties. There are no well-documented studies demonstrating that PMD soothes, heals, or otherwise directly treats the effects of insect bites or stings once they have happened. Its role is more about reducing the risk of being bitten or stung in the first place.

In summary, PMD is scientifically validated as a preventive agent against insect bites and stings, but there is little to no scientific evidence supporting its use for treating bites and stings after they occur. The evidence rating for this specific use is therefore low.
