Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plumbago zeylanica, commonly known as Ceylon leadwort, is traditionally used in various parts of Asia and Africa for the treatment of bites and stings, particularly those from insects and sometimes snakes. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine texts document the use of its root paste, leaf juice, or decoction applied topically to the affected area to relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation. The plant is cited in Ayurveda and other traditional systems for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties, which are thought to help manage symptoms resulting from bites and stings. However, while these uses are well documented in traditional literature, there is limited scientific validation for the effectiveness of P. zeylanica specifically against the toxins or pathological effects caused by bites and stings. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of Plumbago zeylanica extracts, but direct studies on its efficacy in neutralizing venom or treating envenomation are lacking. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use is primarily traditional, with only indirect scientific support for some of its purported effects.
