Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aerva lanata, commonly known as mountain knotgrass or "polpala," has a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems, especially Ayurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine in India and Sri Lanka. It is traditionally used to support urinary health and the bladder. The whole plant, particularly its aerial parts, is used as a diuretic and is believed to help "flush" the urinary tract, relieve urinary retention, and manage conditions like kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and cystitis. Texts such as the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India describe its use for promoting urine flow and supporting the urinary/bladder system.

The scientific validation for these uses is limited but present. Some small-scale in vitro and animal studies suggest diuretic and anti-urolithiatic (anti-kidney stone) properties, which could be relevant to bladder health. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most evidence supporting Aerva lanata's use for the bladder system comes from ethnomedicinal documentation and traditional practice rather than modern clinical research. Therefore, its use is principally justified by traditional evidence, and the overall strength of evidence is moderate (2/5) due to the paucity of high-quality human data.
