Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alchemilla, commonly known as Lady's Mantle, has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, especially for women's health and urinary tract support. In folk medicine, the aerial parts of the plant were often prepared as teas or infusions to support bladder function, treat mild urinary tract discomfort, and address issues such as mild incontinence. The rationale for its use is largely based on its astringent properties, attributed to its high tannin content, which was thought to help tone and strengthen the tissues of the urinary tract and pelvic area. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials that directly validate these traditional uses. Modern phytotherapy texts may mention Alchemilla as a supportive herb in blends for the urinary tract, but recommendations are typically extrapolated from traditional knowledge rather than empirical research. While the herb is generally considered safe in moderate amounts, its efficacy for bladder health has not been established by scientific evidence. As such, its use for supporting the bladder body system is justified primarily by tradition, rather than scientific validation.
