Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bergenia, particularly Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for supporting urinary and bladder health. Traditionally, the rhizomes and roots of Bergenia are prepared as decoctions or powders and used for the management of urinary tract issues, including kidney stones, bladder infections, and general support of the urinary system. The herb is commonly known as "Pashanbheda" in Ayurveda, which translates to "stone breaker," reflecting its reputed ability to help dissolve kidney and bladder stones.

Scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited but not completely absent. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that Bergenia extracts may exert diuretic effects, antimicrobial activity against urinary pathogens, and inhibitory effects on the formation of urinary stones. However, these studies are preliminary, and well-designed human clinical trials are lacking. Most of the rationale for using Bergenia to support the bladder and urinary systems is therefore rooted in traditional practice rather than strong scientific validation. Based on current available data, the evidence is rated as 2 out of 5, reflecting significant traditional use but only limited scientific support.
