Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bergenin is a naturally occurring compound found in several medicinal plants, particularly those from the genus Bergenia. Its use in supporting the bladder and urinary tract has roots in traditional medicine systems, especially Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. These systems have employed Bergenia species (such as Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata) for centuries to manage urinary tract disorders, kidney stones (urolithiasis), and infections. Bergenin is often cited as one of the key bioactive constituents responsible for these effects.

Scientific studies on bergenin itself are more limited, but some preliminary in vitro and animal research suggests that extracts containing bergenin may exhibit anti-urolithiatic (anti-kidney stone), anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties relevant to urinary tract health. However, the direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking, and most evidence is derived from traditional usage and studies with plant extracts, not isolated bergenin. Thus, while there is a traditional foundation for the use of bergenin-containing plants in bladder and urinary support, definitive scientific validation specifically for bergenin is still insufficient. Overall, its use is primarily justified by tradition, with a modest level of supporting evidence.
