Rating (out of 5): 2

Buchu (Agathosma betulina and related species) has a long-standing history of use in traditional South African medicine, particularly by the Khoisan people, for supporting urinary tract and bladder health. The aromatic leaves of the plant were commonly brewed as a tea or used in tinctures to help alleviate symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs), cystitis, and other bladder-related discomforts. This traditional use was adopted by European settlers in the 19th century, and buchu became a popular herbal remedy for urinary issues in Western herbalism.

Modern scientific evidence to support buchu's efficacy for bladder health is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that buchu extracts have mild diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit bladder and urinary tract function. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the mechanism of action is not fully understood. Despite this, its continued use in herbal medicine is primarily justified by historical precedent rather than strong scientific validation. More rigorous research is necessary to determine its safety and effectiveness for supporting the bladder body system.
