Clivers (Galium aparine), also known as cleavers or goosegrass, has a long history of traditional use as a herbal remedy to support the urinary tract and the bladder. In European herbal medicine, clivers has been used as a diuretic, believed to promote urine flow and thus support the cleansing of the urinary system, including the bladder. Traditional herbalists have recommended clivers for conditions associated with urinary tract irritation and water retention, often combining it with other herbs. The supposed mechanism is its mild diuretic action and lymphatic support, which could indirectly benefit the bladder by increasing urine output and reducing inflammation.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Few clinical studies have directly investigated clivers’ effects on the bladder in humans. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties, but these are preliminary and not specific to bladder health. Most evidence for clivers in bladder support thus remains rooted in traditional usage rather than modern clinical trials. As a result, while clivers is widely used in herbal traditions to support the bladder, the strength of evidence is modest, reflecting historical practice more than established scientific proof.
