Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Crinum species, particularly Crinum asiaticum and Crinum latifolium, have a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. In these traditions, extracts from Crinum plants are used to support urinary tract and bladder health, often for their purported diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. For example, traditional Vietnamese and Thai herbal medicine sometimes utilizes Crinum leaves or bulbs as part of formulations aimed at promoting urinary flow, managing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or supporting general bladder comfort.

However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. The few laboratory studies available focus mostly on the general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of Crinum extracts, not specifically on bladder health. Some preliminary research has identified alkaloids in Crinum species with possible smooth muscle relaxant effects, which could theoretically affect urinary tract function, but these findings have not been robustly validated in clinical trials. There is also a lack of well-controlled human studies examining the efficacy or safety of Crinum for bladder health. Thus, its use for supporting the bladder body system is primarily based on tradition rather than scientific validation.

Overall, while Crinum has a notable place in folk medicine for urinary and bladder support, current evidence supporting its effectiveness for this purpose is weak, meriting a low rating.
