Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Crinum latifolium, a plant native to Southeast Asia, has been used traditionally in folk medicine, particularly in Vietnam and other parts of Asia, for supporting urinary and reproductive health. Historical use centers around its application for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate adenoma, and as a remedy for urinary tract issues, including those involving the bladder. In traditional Vietnamese medicine, extracts of Crinum latifolium leaves have been used as tea or decoctions for symptoms such as frequent urination, urinary retention, and pelvic discomfort, which are sometimes attributed to bladder or lower urinary tract dysfunction. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Crinum latifolium contains alkaloids (such as lycorine and crinine) and other phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties. These might theoretically benefit the bladder by reducing inflammation or hyperplasia in the lower urinary tract. However, most published studies focus on prostate health rather than direct effects on the bladder, and robust human clinical trials are lacking. Overall, the use of Crinum latifolium for bladder support is rooted mostly in traditional practice, with modest supporting evidence from preclinical research. There is insufficient high-quality clinical data to fully validate its efficacy or safety for bladder conditions.
