Cubeb (Piper cubeba), also known as tailed pepper, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Unani systems. It was historically used to address urinary tract complaints, including infections, inflammation, and discomfort associated with the bladder. The berries of cubeb have been described in classical texts as possessing diuretic and antiseptic properties, which theoretically support their traditional application for bladder and urinary tract conditions.
European herbalists in the Middle Ages and Renaissance also used cubeb for urinary tract issues. Its essential oils and resinous compounds were believed to help cleanse the urinary passages. However, while cubeb’s traditional use for bladder health is well documented, robust scientific studies and clinical trials validating its efficacy for this purpose are lacking.
