Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cubebs (Piper cubeba), also known as tailed pepper, have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Unani systems. Historically, cubebs were valued for their diuretic and antimicrobial properties and frequently recommended for urinary tract and bladder conditions, such as cystitis and urethritis. The berries were thought to help "cleanse" the urinary tract and support bladder health due to their volatile oils and pungent compounds.

Scientific evidence to support these traditional uses is limited. Some in vitro studies have found mild antimicrobial activity of cubeb essential oil against various pathogens, including some that affect the urinary tract. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient modern research to conclusively validate its efficacy for bladder health. Most contemporary use is based on historical precedent rather than strong scientific backing. As such, while cubebs have a well-documented traditional use for bladder support, the current evidence base does not rise above a modest level.
