Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or purple nutsedge, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani medicine. In these traditions, Cyperus rotundus is often used to support urinary health, which encompasses the bladder. Ayurvedic texts describe it as a diuretic and an agent that can help in the management of dysuria (painful urination) and urinary tract discomfort. Similarly, TCM considers it useful for regulating the flow of Qi, including in the lower abdomen, which may indirectly support bladder function. However, scientific studies specifically validating these traditional uses for the bladder are limited and mostly preliminary. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Cyperus rotundus may have mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings have not been robustly replicated in human clinical trials targeting bladder health. Thus, while the use of Cyperus rotundus for bladder support is well-established in traditional systems, the scientific evidence remains modest and does not strongly confirm its efficacy for this purpose.
