Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

English Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia. Traditionally, the leaves and seeds of the plant have been used for a variety of ailments, including as a mild diuretic and to soothe irritation of the urinary tract. Folk medicine texts sometimes mention its use for urinary tract health, citing its soothing, demulcent, and mildly astringent properties. However, these uses are largely based on tradition and anecdote, not on rigorous scientific evaluation.

There is minimal scientific research directly investigating English Plantain for bladder health or urinary tract support. Most studies focus on its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects, or its use in respiratory conditions. While these properties may theoretically provide some benefit in soothing mucous membranes, including those of the urinary tract, there is insufficient clinical evidence to substantiate its effectiveness for bladder health in humans. As such, the use of English Plantain for supporting the bladder system is best characterized as traditional, with a low rating of evidence.
