Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

European goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine for supporting the urinary tract and bladder. Its use in this context dates back centuries, particularly in German and Central European herbal traditions, where it has been employed as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent to help flush out the urinary system, alleviate symptoms of cystitis, and promote overall bladder health. The German Commission E, which evaluates herbal medicines, has approved goldenrod for use in treating inflammation and infections of the lower urinary tract, as well as for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones. While there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antimicrobial properties of goldenrod extracts, most human clinical trials are small or of low methodological quality. Thus, the support for its use is primarily traditional, bolstered by regulatory acknowledgment in European phytotherapy, with moderate but not robust scientific backing. Its overall safety profile is considered good for short-term use, but more rigorous clinical studies are needed to fully validate its efficacy for bladder health.
