Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Euryale seed, also known as "Qian Shi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in supporting the bladder and urinary system. In TCM theory, Euryale seed is classified as a herb that "stabilizes and binds," particularly noted for its ability to "consolidate the kidney and secure essence," as well as to "stop leakage," which often refers to urinary incontinence, excessive urination, or frequent urination. Historical TCM texts, such as the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), describe its use in formulas intended to strengthen the bladder and reduce urinary frequency, particularly in cases related to kidney and spleen deficiency patterns. However, modern scientific research specifically validating Euryale seed’s effects on the bladder or urinary function in humans is limited and mostly preliminary, with some animal studies suggesting possible diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects. As such, while the traditional foundation for its use in supporting the bladder is strong, robust clinical evidence is lacking, and its use is primarily justified by historical and empirical TCM practice rather than by contemporary scientific validation.
