Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fungi, particularly certain medicinal mushrooms such as Cordyceps, Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), and Polyporus umbellatus, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support urinary and bladder health. In TCM, these fungi are believed to promote urination, reduce dampness, and support kidney and bladder function. For example, Polyporus umbellatus is traditionally used as a diuretic to help with edema and urinary difficulty. Despite these historical uses, modern scientific research into the effects of fungi on bladder health remains limited. Most studies focus on their general immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, or diuretic properties in animal models or in vitro, but there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials specifically addressing bladder health outcomes in humans. Thus, while the use of certain fungi for bladder support is well documented in traditional medical texts, scientific validation is minimal and mostly indirect. The evidence rating of 2 reflects the strong traditional foundation but the current lack of robust clinical science directly supporting these uses for the bladder.
