Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Great Plantain (Plantago major) has been used in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of purposes, including to support urinary and bladder health. In European and Indigenous North American herbal traditions, plantain leaves have been utilized as a diuretic and to soothe irritation of the urinary tract. Historical texts and herbal manuals reference its use for easing mild urinary discomfort, promoting urine flow, and addressing minor bladder inflammation. The plant’s mucilaginous compounds and mild astringent properties are thought to contribute to its traditional use for soothing mucous membranes, including those of the urinary system.

However, current scientific evidence to validate these uses is limited. There are few well-controlled clinical studies directly evaluating the effects of Great Plantain on the bladder or urinary tract in humans. Some laboratory and animal research suggest anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions, which might support traditional uses, but these findings have not been directly translated to bladder health in clinical settings. Thus, while the tradition of using Great Plantain for bladder support exists and is documented, robust scientific validation is lacking at this time.
