Evidence supporting the use of: Ground Ivy
For the body system: Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, including for urinary and bladder complaints. Historical texts and folk medicine practices have recommended Ground Ivy as a mild diuretic and for "clearing" the urinary tract, likely due to its perceived ability to promote urine flow and help with minor urinary tract discomforts. However, there is little to no modern scientific research validating these uses. Most references to Ground Ivy supporting the bladder system are based on ethnobotanical records and herbal texts from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. The plant contains volatile oils, flavonoids, and other phytochemicals, but there is no direct clinical evidence demonstrating efficacy for bladder health or treating urinary tract conditions. Therefore, while its use for the bladder is justified by historical tradition, the level of supporting evidence is weak and not substantiated by contemporary research.
