Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Heather (Calluna vulgaris) has a history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. Historically, heather has been used as a remedy for urinary tract conditions, including cystitis and other bladder-related complaints. The aerial parts of the plant were often prepared as teas or infusions, believed to possess diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, thus supporting bladder health by increasing urine flow and soothing inflamed tissues. These uses are documented in herbal texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as those by Maud Grieve and other herbalists.

However, the evidence supporting heather’s efficacy for bladder health is largely anecdotal and based on traditional usage. There is very limited scientific research or modern clinical studies that validate these effects. Most contemporary sources reference historical usage rather than providing new experimental data, and any biochemical mechanisms remain speculative. Therefore, while heather continues to be included in some herbal blends aimed at urinary tract health, its use is justified primarily by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
