Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus) has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, primarily for its purported benefits to the urinary and bladder systems. Historical texts describe its use as a diuretic, coolant, and detoxifying agent, believed to support bladder health by promoting urine flow and alleviating burning sensations during urination. The root is also traditionally used for conditions described as "urinary disorders" or "mutrakrichha" in Ayurveda.

However, modern scientific validation for these traditional claims is limited. While a few in vitro and animal studies suggest antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mild diuretic properties, robust clinical trials in humans specifically examining bladder health outcomes are lacking. The majority of current evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage patterns within Ayurvedic practice. Therefore, while Indian Sarsaparilla is used traditionally to support bladder function, current scientific evidence does not strongly validate this use.
