Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Java Tea (Orthosiphon stamineus), also known as cat's whiskers, has a well-established traditional use in Southeast Asia and Europe for supporting urinary tract and bladder health. Modern scientific research has provided some validation for these uses. Studies have demonstrated that extracts of Java Tea possess diuretic properties, which can help increase urine output and support normal urinary tract function. Animal and limited human studies suggest that Java Tea may help flush the urinary system, potentially supporting bladder health by reducing urinary retention and decreasing the risk of urinary tract infections. Additionally, Java Tea contains various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and essential oils, which have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These properties may contribute to its supportive role in bladder and urinary tract health. However, while there is a growing body of scientific literature supporting its diuretic and urinary tract benefits, large-scale clinical trials in humans are still limited. Therefore, the evidence base, while promising and grounded in both traditional use and preliminary scientific validation, is not yet robust enough to warrant a higher evidence rating.
