Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lophatherum gracile (commonly known as "Danzhuye" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM) has been historically used to support the urinary and bladder system. In TCM, Lophatherum is categorized as a "clearing heat" and "eliminating irritability" herb, and is often included in formulas to promote urination and address symptoms such as difficult urination, urinary tract discomfort, or dark, scanty urine. The traditional rationale is that it helps to "clear heat from the Heart and Small Intestine," indirectly benefiting bladder function by resolving so-called "damp-heat" in the lower burner (an energetic concept that encompasses the bladder and urinary pathways). However, scientific evidence directly supporting its effect on the bladder is limited; most available data are either in vitro or animal studies focusing on its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, or antioxidant properties. Clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating bladder health are lacking. In summary, Lophatherum's use for supporting the bladder body system is primarily justified by a long history of traditional use rather than robust scientific validation.
