Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lygodium (commonly known as climbing fern) has a history of use in traditional medicine, especially within East Asian systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and some Southeast Asian folk medicine. In TCM, species like Lygodium japonicum (referred to as Hai Jin Sha) are traditionally used as diuretics and to promote urination, which indirectly relates to support of the bladder and urinary tract. Lygodium is believed to help in conditions like painful urination, urinary tract infections, or urinary retention, and it is sometimes included in formulations aimed at supporting the health of the bladder and kidneys.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is minimal. Very few modern pharmacological or clinical studies have investigated the effects of Lygodium species on urinary or bladder health. The limited evidence available is mostly based on in vitro or animal studies, and does not provide strong validation for its efficacy or safety in humans for these indications. Most available sources cite historical and traditional use rather than scientific validation. Therefore, while there is a traditional rationale for its use in supporting the bladder, the strength of evidence remains low and is not substantiated by robust clinical research.
