Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lysimachia, commonly known as "Gold Coin Grass" (Lysimachia christinae), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting urinary and bladder health. In TCM, it is traditionally used to promote urination, clear heat, and eliminate dampness, making it a common remedy for conditions such as urinary tract infections, difficult urination, and urinary stones (urolithiasis). The herb is believed to help expel stones from the urinary tract and alleviate associated symptoms. Historical texts and herbal compendiums in China document its use for centuries for these purposes. However, scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited. A handful of in vitro and animal studies suggest that Lysimachia extracts may have diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects, and some studies indicate potential inhibitory effects on the formation of urinary stones. Despite these early findings, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and systematic reviews highlight the need for more high-quality research to confirm efficacy and safety. Therefore, while the use of Lysimachia for bladder support is well-established in traditional medicine, the scientific evidence base is still developing and relatively weak. The rating reflects the strong tradition but limited modern validation.
