Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. It has been employed for a variety of ailments, most notably for respiratory conditions, but also, to a lesser extent, for urinary and bladder issues. In traditional Persian and Unani medicine, Maidenhair Fern has been used as a mild diuretic and to support urinary tract health, including the bladder, often being combined with other herbs to increase urine output or help with mild urinary discomfort.

However, the evidence to support its efficacy for bladder health is primarily anecdotal or based on historical herbal texts. There is very limited modern scientific research directly investigating Maidenhair Fern's effects on the bladder or urinary system. No high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies have conclusively demonstrated its benefit for bladder health. Most available studies focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or respiratory effects. Therefore, while there is a traditional rationale for its use in supporting the bladder, the strength of evidence is low and not supported by rigorous scientific validation.
