Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for supporting urinary tract health, including the bladder. Traditionally, meadowsweet was employed as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory herb, believed to help "cleanse" the urinary system and alleviate discomfort associated with mild urinary tract irritations. The plant contains salicylates, flavonoids, and tannins, compounds that have mild anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Historical texts and folk medicine accounts describe its use in teas or infusions aimed at promoting urination and soothing the mucous membranes of the bladder and urinary tract.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating meadowsweet's effects on bladder health are lacking. Most of the available research focuses on meadowsweet's anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in general, rather than on the urinary tract specifically. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest antimicrobial activity, but these are preliminary and not directly linked to bladder support. Therefore, while there is a clear tradition of using meadowsweet for bladder and urinary health, robust scientific validation is absent. The evidence rating reflects this reliance on traditional use rather than modern clinical data.
