Palo Azul (Eysenhardtia polystachya), also known as "kidney wood," has been traditionally used in Mexican folk medicine as a remedy to support urinary and bladder health. The use of Palo Azul tea is rooted in its perceived diuretic properties, promoting increased urine output and thus "cleansing" the urinary tract. Historical accounts and ethnobotanical records indicate that indigenous peoples and traditional healers have recommended Palo Azul for bladder discomfort, urinary tract infections, and kidney-related ailments.
Despite its long-standing traditional use, scientific research on Palo Azul’s efficacy for bladder or urinary tract health is limited. Very few clinical studies exist, and most available data are from in vitro or animal studies investigating its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. While these effects could theoretically support urinary tract health, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to confirm any direct benefit specifically for the bladder in humans. Therefore, its use for bladder support is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.
