For the body system: Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pareira, also known as Pareira brava (Chondrodendron tomentosum or Cissampelos pareira), has a long-standing history of use in traditional herbal and homeopathic medicine, particularly for urinary and bladder-related issues. In traditional herbal practices, especially in South America and India, the root of Pareira has been used as a diuretic and to help relieve symptoms associated with urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and bladder irritation. Homeopathic materia medica texts also reference Pareira for urinary complaints such as painful urination, retention, and discomfort associated with kidney stones. However, modern clinical research to substantiate these uses is limited and of low quality. The evidence is mainly anecdotal or based on case reports and historical texts rather than robust scientific studies. There are some phytochemical studies indicating the presence of alkaloids and other compounds with potential anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, but these findings have not been translated into well-controlled human trials to validate efficacy for bladder health. Therefore, while there is a documented traditional basis for using Pareira to support the bladder, scientific validation is currently lacking, and the strength of evidence remains low.
