Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pedalium murex, commonly known as "large caltrops" or "Gokhru," has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine as a remedy for various urinary and bladder conditions. Historical texts and ethnobotanical studies cite its use for supporting urinary tract health, treating urinary tract infections, and managing kidney or bladder stones. Traditional practitioners often recommend Pedalium as a diuretic and for relieving symptoms such as dysuria (painful urination) and urinary frequency.

While modern scientific studies on Pedalium murex are limited, a few animal and in vitro studies suggest possible antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. For example, some research indicates that extracts of Pedalium may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria implicated in urinary tract infections and may increase urine output in animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the existing scientific evidence is insufficient to conclusively validate its efficacy for bladder health. As such, the use of Pedalium for the bladder body system is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific validation.
