Evidence supporting the use of: Potassium Citrate
For the body system: Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Potassium citrate is scientifically validated for use in supporting the bladder, particularly in the context of urinary tract health and the prevention of certain types of kidney stones. Its primary mechanism involves alkalinizing the urine, which can help reduce the formation of uric acid and cystine stones. Clinical guidelines, including those from the American Urological Association, recommend potassium citrate as a first-line preventive treatment for patients with recurrent kidney stones, especially those composed of uric acid or cystine, both of which are more likely to form in acidic urine. By increasing urinary pH and citrate levels, potassium citrate reduces stone-forming tendencies and can also help dissolve existing uric acid stones. Additionally, higher urinary citrate concentrations inhibit calcium stone formation by binding calcium, reducing supersaturation. While its use is most directly tied to kidney stone management, this action indirectly supports bladder health by reducing stone-related irritation, infection risk, and the potential for obstruction. Several randomized trials and meta-analyses support potassium citrate’s efficacy in these roles. There is less direct evidence for its use in other bladder conditions (such as overactive bladder or interstitial cystitis), but its effect on urinary chemistry is well established. Potassium citrate should be used under medical supervision, as inappropriate use can cause electrolyte imbalances or worsen certain conditions.
