Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Pumpkin seed oil has been traditionally used in various cultures to support urinary and bladder health, but in recent years, scientific research has begun to validate some of these claims. Several small clinical studies and laboratory experiments suggest that pumpkin seed oil may benefit bladder function, particularly in cases of overactive bladder (OAB) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which can affect urinary flow and frequency.

The oil contains phytosterols, omega-6 fatty acids, and antioxidant compounds, which are thought to contribute to its effects. A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the journal Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (2014) found that supplementation with pumpkin seed oil extract significantly improved symptoms of OAB, including daytime and nighttime urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence, in both men and women over a 12-week period. Similar benefits have been observed in studies examining its role in supporting prostate health, indirectly benefiting bladder function by improving urinary flow in men with BPH.

While the body of evidence is still relatively modest, and many studies have small sample sizes or are of short duration, the results are promising enough to warrant a moderate evidence score. Larger and longer-term clinical trials would help strengthen the scientific foundation for its use. Nevertheless, current research suggests that pumpkin seed oil can be a supportive option for bladder health.
