Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Pumpkin seed oil is traditionally used and increasingly studied as a natural remedy to support bladder health, particularly for conditions like overactive bladder and urinary incontinence. Scientific evidence for its efficacy is emerging, though it is not yet robust. Several human clinical studies, mostly small and preliminary, have evaluated the effects of pumpkin seed oil supplements on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and found modest improvements.

A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (2014) involved 45 participants with overactive bladder. Subjects taking pumpkin seed oil extract showed significant reductions in daytime and nighttime urinary frequency compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism involves the oil's content of phytosterols, fatty acids, and possible modulation of androgen receptors, which may support bladder muscle function.

Additionally, pumpkin seed extract is included in some European herbal combinations for urinary tract support, and its use is also recognized in traditional medicine. However, scientific studies remain limited in scale and length, and while results are promising, more high-quality trials are needed to confirm efficacy and clarify mechanisms. Thus, while there is scientific validation supporting pumpkin seed oil's use for bladder health, the strength of evidence is moderate rather than definitive.
