Pumpkinseed oil (Cucurbita pepo) has a history of use in traditional medicine for urinary and prostate health, but its use to support bladder function is also supported by emerging scientific evidence. Multiple clinical studies have investigated the effects of pumpkinseed oil on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), particularly in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but also in women with overactive bladder (OAB).

For example, a 2014 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Nishimura et al. found that supplementation with pumpkinseed oil extract significantly improved symptoms of OAB in women, including urinary frequency and urgency, over a 12-week period. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase, modulation of androgen receptors, and anti-inflammatory effects that may benefit the detrusor muscle and bladder function.

Meta-analyses and reviews suggest that while the evidence is not yet extensive, results from small clinical trials are promising and consistent with traditional uses. However, more large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to confirm these benefits and better understand the mechanisms involved.

In summary, pumpkinseed oil is used to support the bladder based on both traditional practice and a moderate but growing body of scientific evidence, particularly for improving symptoms of OAB and supporting urinary tract health.
