Pyrrosia, commonly known as Pyrrosia leaf or Shi Wei (石韦) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use to support the urinary and bladder systems. In TCM, Pyrrosia is traditionally used to "clear heat," "drain dampness," and promote urination. It is often utilized in herbal formulas for conditions such as painful or difficult urination, urinary tract infections, or stones, where it is believed to help "remove damp-heat from the lower burner" (the lower part of the body, including the bladder). Several classical Chinese materia medica texts describe Pyrrosia's use for these purposes, and it remains included in modern Chinese pharmacopeia for similar indications.
However, scientific validation for Pyrrosia's efficacy in supporting bladder health is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have suggested that Pyrrosia extracts may have mild anti-inflammatory or diuretic effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while there is substantial traditional precedent for its use in bladder conditions, scientific evidence remains preliminary and insufficient to strongly validate its effectiveness for this purpose.
