Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American and early North American settlers. Traditionally, sassafras root and bark were used as a tea or tonic for a variety of ailments, including as a "blood purifier" or to promote urinary health. It was sometimes recommended to support the bladder and urinary tract, likely due to observed diuretic effects, meaning it may increase urine output. However, while these uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical records and early herbal literature, there is very limited scientific research directly supporting sassafras for bladder health or urinary tract support. Modern studies are lacking, and safety concerns have been raised due to the presence of safrole, a compound in sassafras that is considered carcinogenic and has led to regulatory restrictions on its use. Thus, while the traditional use for bladder support exists, it is not strongly supported by scientific evidence, and safety issues further limit its modern use for this purpose.
