Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian folk practices. In these traditions, it is employed for various urinary tract and bladder-related issues, such as urinary tract infections, incontinence, and as a general diuretic. The plant’s root, leaves, and seeds are all used in different formulations, often as decoctions or powders. The rationale in traditional medicine centers around its reputed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties, which are believed to help soothe the urinary tract and support bladder health.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. A handful of in vitro and animal studies suggest that Mimosa pudica extracts may possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, but there is little direct clinical evidence specifically supporting benefits for the human bladder or urinary system. No robust human trials have established its efficacy for bladder health. Therefore, while its use in this context is primarily justified by traditional practice and historical precedent, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy remains preliminary and insufficient for strong recommendations.
