Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Soft rush (Juncus effusus) has a history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this context, the dried pith of soft rush, known as "Deng Xin Cao," is included in herbal formulas to support urinary health and is believed to have diuretic and sedative properties. It is traditionally used to "clear heat" and "promote urination," and is prescribed for conditions such as dysuria (painful or difficult urination), scanty urination, and sometimes for irritability or insomnia associated with urinary discomfort. The traditional justification for its use is based on centuries of empirical practice rather than modern pharmacological research.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited research on the pharmacological effects of Juncus effusus and its impact on the bladder or urinary system. Some preliminary studies have identified antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds in the plant, but these have not been specifically linked to bladder health in clinical trials. As such, the support for its use in the context of bladder health rests primarily on the foundation of traditional herbal medicine rather than rigorous scientific validation.
