Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Stachytarpheta cayennensis, commonly known as blue porterweed, has a long history of use in traditional medicine in various tropical regions, particularly in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and parts of Africa. Traditional healers have used infusions and decoctions of the plant, especially its leaves, for various urinary ailments, including as a diuretic and to support bladder health. The rationale for this use is primarily based on ethnobotanical reports and traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Some traditional practices involve using Stachytarpheta cayennensis to alleviate symptoms of urinary tract infections, promote urination, or manage mild cases of cystitis, although the precise mechanisms or active constituents responsible for these effects are not well understood. Scientific studies specifically validating its efficacy for bladder health are limited. While laboratory research has identified certain bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to conclusively support its use for bladder or urinary tract health in humans. Most of the available data are anecdotal or derived from traditional usage, with only a few preliminary pharmacological studies in animals or in vitro. Therefore, while the traditional use is well documented, the strength of evidence for its effectiveness in supporting the bladder system remains modest.
