Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Taraxacum mongolicum, commonly known as Mongolian dandelion, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting urinary health, including the bladder. In TCM, it is believed to “clear heat” and “eliminate toxins,” and is frequently prescribed for conditions such as urinary tract infections, dysuria (painful or difficult urination), and inflammation of the lower urinary tract. The plant is thought to have diuretic properties, increasing urine output and thus supporting the excretion of waste products via the bladder.

While there is some laboratory evidence that extracts of Taraxacum species may possess mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, these studies are mostly preliminary and not specific to bladder health in humans. Clinical trials directly evaluating Taraxacum mongolicum’s effectiveness for bladder support are lacking. Thus, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by extensive traditional use rather than rigorous scientific validation. The evidence rating is moderate (2/5), based on its entrenched role in herbal practice rather than strong clinical proof.
