Evidence supporting the use of: Three-leaf akebia
For the body system: Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Three-leaf akebia (Akebia trifoliata) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), particularly for supporting the urinary and bladder systems. In TCM, the stems of the plant (known as Mu Tong) are used as a diuretic and to “clear heat” and “drain dampness,” which are considered to relate to conditions such as urinary tract infections, painful urination, and edema. The herb is often included in classical formulas for promoting urination and treating dysuria (difficult urination).
Scientific validation is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and mild diuretic effects from extracts of Akebia trifoliata; however, these are preliminary and have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials. The main evidence for its use to support the bladder comes from centuries of traditional use and documentation in Chinese herbal pharmacopeias. Modern pharmacological research has not yet provided high-quality evidence for its efficacy or safety for bladder health specifically. Thus, the use of Three-leaf akebia for supporting the bladder is primarily justified by tradition, with a moderate strength of evidence based on its long-standing role in herbal medicine rather than strong clinical studies.
