Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
White Nettle (Lamium album), also known as dead nettle, has a long history of use in European traditional herbal medicine. Historically, the aerial parts and flowers of white nettle have been used as a mild diuretic and to support healthy urinary tract and bladder function. Folk remedies have employed white nettle infusions to soothe minor bladder irritations and to help flush the urinary tract, with some herbalists also citing its mild astringent properties as beneficial for reducing excess urinary frequency or mild inflammation.
However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited and largely consists of in vitro studies on anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which do not directly translate to clinical efficacy for bladder health. There are no robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating a clear benefit of white nettle for bladder support. As such, its use for the bladder is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than by modern scientific validation. White nettle’s inclusion in bladder or urinary formulas is therefore based more on historical precedent than on contemporary research.
