Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Abuta, a plant genus commonly found in South American traditional medicine, has been used historically for various urinary tract ailments, including bladder infections. In ethnobotanical records, particularly among indigenous peoples of the Amazon, preparations of Abuta (notably from Abuta grandifolia and Cissampelos pareira) have been employed as diuretics and to alleviate inflammation and discomfort associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs). The plant is sometimes referred to as "vegetable gold" or "goldthread" in local traditions, and decoctions of its stem or root are traditionally consumed to promote urination and soothe bladder irritation. However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. While some laboratory studies have indicated that related species in the Menispermaceae family possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, direct evidence for Abuta’s effectiveness against the pathogens responsible for bladder infections is lacking. No well-controlled clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies have specifically demonstrated Abuta’s efficacy or safety in treating UTIs in humans. Thus, its use for bladder infections is justified primarily by traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific evidence.
