Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ardisia species, particularly Ardisia japonica, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for various ailments, including inflammatory and urinary conditions. There are records of Ardisia being used as a diuretic and for the treatment of "heat" in the urinary tract, which is considered analogous to symptoms of bladder infection (cystitis) in contemporary terms. The root and leaves of Ardisia are sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to "clear heat" and "promote urination." However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Ardisia extracts in treating bladder infections. Few in vitro or in vivo studies have examined its antibacterial activity against pathogens typically causing urinary tract infections (such as E. coli), and those that exist tend to focus on other pharmacological effects (e.g., anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties). Accordingly, the use of Ardisia for bladder infection is primarily based on traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence is weak.
