Bacteria, specifically probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, are used to support or prevent bladder infections (urinary tract infections, UTIs) based on growing scientific evidence. The rationale relies on the ability of certain probiotic bacteria to restore and maintain healthy urogenital flora, competitively inhibit pathogen adhesion (such as Escherichia coli), and modulate immune responses. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses support the use of specific probiotic strains, especially vaginally or orally administered Lactobacillus, in reducing the recurrence of UTIs in women. For example, a 2017 Cochrane review concluded that while antibiotics remain the standard of care, some probiotic preparations show a modest but significant effect in reducing UTI recurrence compared to placebo, especially in women with recurrent infections. However, the evidence is not as robust as for antibiotics, and effectiveness depends on the strain, dose, and delivery route. There is less evidence for probiotics as a treatment for acute bladder infection, with most studies focusing on prevention. Overall, while not a replacement for antibiotics in acute infections, the use of certain probiotic bacteria is scientifically validated as a supportive or preventive strategy for bladder infections, meriting a relatively high evidence score.
