Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Raisintree (Hovenia dulcis), also known as the Japanese raisin tree, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. Its seeds, stems, and fruit have been employed for a variety of ailments, including liver detoxification, hangover relief, and, less commonly, urinary tract issues such as bladder infections. The traditional use for bladder infection is generally based on its purported diuretic properties and its supposed ability to "clear heat" and "eliminate dampness," concepts rooted in traditional Chinese medical theory. However, when it comes to modern scientific validation, there is limited evidence. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Hovenia dulcis may have antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects, but these studies do not specifically address bladder infection (urinary tract infection) in humans. There are no well-conducted clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies directly linking Chinese Raisintree to the effective treatment or support of bladder infections. Therefore, its use for this condition is justified mainly by tradition rather than science, and the overall quality of evidence is low.
